Both boys have colds. Yeah! I’ve spent the morning making floor pallets and getting the DVD collection set, so the boys can watch movies and be pity all day. They’re happily lounging on a spread out sleeping bag with extra pillows and stuffed animals in front of Bob the Builder. I’ve never been so happy for the collection of about 6 “Bob Builder” DVD’s we have. Hopefully it’ll keep their attention long enough for their little bodies to fight off this bug.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes have their final game of the regular season tonight and thanks to the whoopping that the Washington Capitals handed them last week, the whole season comes down to tonight. If they win, the Carolina Hurricnaes win the Southeast Division, are guaranteed the third seed in the playoffs, and home ice. If the Hurricanes lose, their fate is out of their hands. They’ll have to hope that Washington loses their final game tomorrow night or maybe hope that Philadelphia or Boston chokes. I’m hyped up as hell! I might even have to be dork enough to sit at home in my jersey for the game tonight….and with two sick boys, I’ve never been more grateful for my DVR.

Time to take care of business, Canes.

Let’s Go Canes!

The Hurricanes lost a piece of their heart last night. It’s going to be rough going without you, Roddy. I guess it’s the hockey gods’ way of telling us it’s time to let some other stars shine for a bit.

Forget the Super Bowl, this is one of the biggest weekends in sports for me. It’s the annual celebration for NHL dorks like me. Saturday night features the skills competition, which is my favorite part. Players compete in categories like “fastest skater”, “hardest shot”, and “most accurate shot”. To me, this competition highlights the players personalities and some important skills that might not get top billing during regular play (unless you’re Dion Phaneuf, and then it makes the national news). I know it’s a giant popularity contest and the game on Sunday isn’t as rough and tumble as we’ve come to expect, but that’s no reason not to like it for what it is. Some bloggers are bitter that the All-Star game is a “pass and lay-up” game, not me. It gives the fans access to the players that they don’t normally get. Last year they put a microphone on Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco and got sound bites that we’ll never forget. Let’s look forward to getting chance to know the guys that play our favorite game and even getting glimpses at Alex Ovechkin’s sense of humor, not the usual body-checks and hard hits. We will return to our regular NHL programming next week, I think we’ll all survive.

On a hockey note, the Carolina Hurricanes placed their back-up goaltender, John Grahame, on waivers today. I’m going to throw a freakin’ party! Buh-bye, you no-puck stopping man-whore!

But, on the inside, we’re CANIACS! We’re nuts about our Carolina Hurricanes NHL team. Emmett’s the only one in the family that doesn’t have a jersey, yet. He’ll grow into his brother’s soon, though. We have red with a black square “hurricane warning” flags displayed proudly in front of our house. I have a framed print of the team posing with the Stanley Cup on the wall right next to my desk. We’ve made the trek up to Raleigh for three games so far this season and have managed to watch or listen to the rest. I spend whatever free time I have during hockey season talking about and reading about the Canes. I blog about them when I can, but when I don’t have time, I just catch up with my good friend, wufpirate on his blog. My husband and I even try to make as many East Carolina University Ice Hockey Club games over in Greenville as we can.

I have to admit, the biggest reasons I want to move out of Washington is a.) to get closer to the RBC Center and my Hurricanes and b.) so my boys can play hockey. Sad, huh?

Anyway, this post was brought on by another blog post I read this morning. Several Hurricanes and even Coach Laviolette made some hospital visits around the Triangle area and even took some kids Christmas shopping at Target. Its a great article and some great pictures. I saw of my favorite on-ice personalities show their off-ice faces, like Ray Whitney, Chad LaRose, Cam Ward, Mike Commidore, Rod Brind’Amour, Cory Stillman, and Matt Cullen. The guys that do PR for the Canes have a great job. I’m jealous.

After a loss last night to the Florida Panthers, we’ll be tuned in tonight with our fingers crossed that we can finally own the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum. To think, I lived about 50 blocks from that place, 11 years ago, and didn’t even know what hockey was.
