The nickname Fruit Bat came along when Ollie was about a year old. He literally lived on fruit for about 6 months, so we called him the Fruit Bat. Looks like Emmett has the same tendancies. He’s following in his brother’s footsteps, although, he’s waited a little longer to start down that path. So far this morning he’s had two bananas and a half an apple. The two of them will destroy 2 pounds of strawberries in a day and Emmett will eat 2 cups of grapes at a time. Its truly amazing. I guess there could be far worse things for the two of them to be so nuts over, huh?

It occurs to me as I rifle through my cabinets for snacks for the boys that some people manage to make it through parenthood without cooking. How is that? How is it that people are always on the go and never home? How can people make it through life without learning how to boil water or scramble an egg? I’m not talking about gourmet here, just basics. My kids graze constantly. I try to make as many of their snacks as I can, but time rarely allows. I cook our meals, we eat out maybe a few times a month. I find it hard to believe that we are the exception to the rule. How is that possible? Is it laziness or are people really that over-scheduled? How do they afford it? That’s a lot of disposable income right there. I’ve never been that kind of career-minded person in the first place, but now that I have my boys, I find it impossible to put myself in those shoes. I just don’t have it in me to put my career goals before my family. I couldn’t by-pass homemade dinners with my kids to work late. I know, I know….people will say that they “have” to. I think its amazing the things we find we can live without if we really look at our priorities.

I’m off to peel an apple and fill sippy cups. The snack machines are empty again.

We love Backwater Jack’s. Its a local tiki bar type of place, but I hate to squeeze it into any type of category. Its on the water, has two huge decks, and even some indoor seating. They have great food and even greater drinks. We wandered up Saturday night while we were out with my dad and found a local bluegrass band playing, Carolina Still. We sat and had a few beers, watched an awesome college football game on TV, and listened to some great music. Unfortunately, they had to call it quites fairly early because their fiddle player was sick. I could have sat there all night. Much thanks to Laura and Cathy for having such a great place in Washington. We never thought we would have somewhere we would be so proud of.

Andy and I have a thing for ribs. Not just any ribs, but the kind that are smoked and super moist and tender. We had some kick-ass ribs Saturday night from Clawson’s 1905 in Beaufort, NC. Nothing beats baby-backs with just the right amount of sauce, not drowned in it. They have the best rolls, too. They’re barely sweet served with soft butter. Crap, now I’m ready to go back. Its a good thing for me that its 2 hours away. I guess I’d better work a little harder on perfecting my skills with the smoker. Nothing draws out the neighbors like when I fire the smoker up and add some hickory chunks.
