After a fun trip to the grocery store for a big Labor Day buy one, get one sale, we’ve hit the backyard for some boy entertainment. On the way home from the store we spotted some folks setting up for a yard sale. We are now the proud new owners of a washed out, faded plastic kitchen. Its obviously been in someone’s backyard for quite a few years, and now its in ours. Its all the fun you can muster for a dollar. Ollie has made me ice cream out of sand and has something baking in the oven now. Emmett has spent his afternoon with a slotted trash can on his head. I guess he’s a space man.

Ollie and I tried to go out in the backyard and play while Emmett was napping, but it didn’t work out too well. The cicadas are so loud that my ears were ringing when we came back inside. No kidding. We can hear them in the house over the TV. Ollie asked me what that really loud noise was and I told him it was cicadas. He asked me what those were and when I told  him they were bugs, he went looking for them. I then informed him that cicadas lived up in the trees so he would stop tearing things apart trying to find them. Now, every bug we see anywhere near a tree must be a cicada. He’s even looking them up on the dead laptop he has to play with. He says the pictures are “really noisy”.

We had a very pleasant afternoon for August. Its only in the mid to upper eighties here. Believe, that’s quite an improvement. The boys got to run around Nanna’s backyard for a little while and had a great time. They ate popcorn and fed some to Francis, the Scottish Terrier.

On the way back to our house, I decided to run a couple errands. Ollie decided he wasn’t as well as I thought he was. He threw up all over himself and the car. Dammit.

When Ollie wakes up at 9:15 to throw up all his mac and cheese in his bed, its going to be a bad night. We’re now on our third set of PJ’s and sheets and its not even 10:30. I know this is a rite of parental passage, but it sure sucks. It doesn’t smell too great, either.

Update: 10:50 and we’re still going. After trying to put Ollie back to bed and having him choke on vomit, we’ve kept him up. He’s got to run out of fuel eventually.

Wednesday Morning: We were up at 4, 4:20, and so on.  We gave him some phenergan at about 12 and it helped for almost exactly 4 hours. I just found one more dose. He’s trying to keep a little bit of juice down…….nope. It all just came right back. Guess we get to go to the doctor.

Ollie’s stitches are out. His cut looks great and shouldn’t scar much at all. He only had minor fit on the way into the doctor’s office. So all in all it was a successful event in the life of a little boy. When we were done he went up to the nurse and the PA and said “Thank you soooo much.”. It was really sweet. I hope that’s a reflection on my parenting skills and he’s learning to be appreciative. We’ll see as time goes by if he’s sincere or just saying what he thinks we want him to say.

In the meantime, the weather has cooled off a wee bit so the boys are enjoying an afternoon in the backyard. They’ve been riding tricycles and running around with a tennis ball so the dog will chase them. I would feel sorry for her, but every time one of the boys puts it down, she picks it up and gives it back to them. Ah, Emmett has just found the empty sandbox that filled with rainwater last night. He’s completely soaked and extremely proud of himself. More laundry for mommy.
