For my two little boys, happiness was an afternoon at the beach with our dog. Maggie and the boys got to spend the afternoon chasing the surf in Emerald Isle yesterday. The boys rested up last night, but Mags is still dragging a little. She even got brand new tennis balls for the trip. We spent the weekend with a friend who has two other Jack Russel Terriers and the site of three little white butts wagging their way around the yard was priceless. Now we’re home and back in the construction business. Andy has already replaced the bathroom window and is taking out the old windows in Emmett’s room as I type.

Ollie had a nasty respiratory virus a couple of weeks ago and the cough from it has stuck around. I decided this morning that 2 weeks was long enough, so we went to the doctor. The good news is he doesn’t have walking pneumonia or bronchitis. The bad news is he’s going to follow in the family footsteps and have allergies. Oh well, at least antihistamines have come really far in the last 10 or 15 years.

The caterpillar seems to be doing fine in his bug box domicile, but I think we’re going to let him go soon. After reading up on his life cycle, it seems that pupate over the winter underground and emerge in June. I don’t think I want to keep a box of dirt around that long to let the kids observe science. We’ll try with a smaller caterpillar some other time. He’s still the coolest (biggest) caterpillar I’ve ever seen. Now we’ll be on the lookout for more C.O.U.S’s (for those of you not familiar with The Princess Bride, that’s Caterpillars of Unusual Size).

In the last 3 loads of boy laundry I’ve found:

1. a toy saw
2. a princess weeble
3. a sippy cup full of juice
4. a red grape
5. several Goldfish crackers

Washing the boy’s clothes is always an adventure, but lately its been getting more interesting. The hardest part is having to pick through all the dirty clothes so none of these fun things get washed.

Despite some last minute snags, we had a great time last night. We had some good burgers and some great stories were told. Lots of thanks to everyone who came. A big thanks to John and Jen, who managed to be the only surprise that panned out. It was great to have you here. It was also great to see our resident pottery expert, Carolyn. Its been a long summer without her….and now I have one of her famous birds to show for it. Susan, Amy, and Duda a big thanks to you guys, too. We even brought in the neighbor connection, with Summer our old neighbor and Fred and Sadie our new neighbors. And as always, the Spains brought the grill.

It was a great way to spend my 30th.
